Born in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

He has been married to Vivian Álvarez, MT, also from San Juan, for nearly 44 years. Together, they have three married children and eight grandchildren. Their children are a certified nurse anesthetist, a teacher/artist, and an attorney.

Dr. Sotomayor graduated with honors from Colegio Espíritu Santo in 1972. During his youth, he was actively involved in the Boy Scouts of America, earning the prestigious ranks of Eagle Scout and Vigil Honor. He also served as editor of the school newspaper and was an active member of his church.

He earned his undergraduate degree in Premedical Studies/Biology from the University of Puerto Rico in 1976, where he worked in the Department of Ecology as a teaching assistant and lab coordinator.

After graduating from college, he enrolled in a newly established private medical school in Cayey, Puerto Rico, becoming part of its first graduating class in 1980. Thanks to the class’s rigorous training, the institution achieved the sought-after accreditation as the Universidad Central del Caribe, just in time for the graduates to begin their internships in Akron, Ohio. Dr. Sotomayor completed his residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at St. Thomas Hospital Medical Center in 1984.

Later that year, Dr. Sotomayor and his wife moved to Atlanta, Georgia, where they opened a private practice in Sandy Springs and Atlanta. His passion for education led him to found the Education Department at both Northside Hospital and St. Joseph’s Hospital. He also served as a clinical professor at Georgia Baptist Hospital, where he enjoyed teaching obstetrics and gynecology residents.

As part of his commitment to the dignity of human life, he became actively involved in the pro-life movement through Birthright International, Georgia Right to Life, and numerous crisis pregnancy centers. He has advocated for bioethical principles in various forums and founded a nonprofit organization called Babies For Life. Thanks to the efforts of many generous volunteers, a statewide network of umbilical cord and placenta blood collection centers was established. Furthermore, with the support of honorable members of the Georgia Senate and House of Representatives, a landmark piece of legislation—The Save the Cure Act—was passed and enacted into law.

Following the principles of Babies For Life, numerous research laboratories were founded—not only in Georgia but also throughout the United States, Central and South America, and Europe. Today, Marietta, Georgia, is home to the largest placenta and umbilical cord blood research company in the United States. Dr. Sotomayor also published a casebook for surgeons on the use of donor-derived placental stem cells and the regenerative advancements observed in recent years.

His dedication to preserving the sacred bond of marriage has been evident throughout the many conferences he has led over the years, exposing the harms of contraception and abortion, while promoting the benefits of scientifically grounded natural family planning methods.

Currently, Dr. Sotomayor is considering retiring from daily medical practice to focus his efforts on promoting ethical stem cell research and treatments for the betterment of humanity.
